First laboratory classes conducted at optical fiber draw tower set jointly by University and Optic fiber Systems

Optic fiber Systems JSC (further OVS) together with Ogarev Mordovia State University (MRSU) created an educational and scientific laboratory of optic fiber production technology housed by the Institute of Science-based Technologies and New Materials. Besides a fiber draw tower was put into operation at the University.

The first classes have already started in the laboratory. Mentored by OVS teachers – specialists, master program students independently received the first meters of optical fibers at the university optical fiber draw tower.

At the Institute's base, namely at the Department of Photonics established in 2022, highly qualified personnel will be trained for the existing production of OVS, as well as the future second stage – a preform plant.

The curriculum for training specialists in this field includes both basic disciplines on fiber optics and special disciplines on technologies for obtaining optical fiber preforms, optical fiber draw technologies and measurements of optical fiber parameters. OVS employees actively participate in the formation of the curriculum and teaching of special disciplines. Also, future specialists will undergo production, technological and design trainings, and perform qualification work at OVS.

It should also be noted that currently, within the cooperation between OVS and MRSU, personnel is being trained for OVS under bachelor and master degree programs based on employer-sponsored education basis.


“Optic fiber Systems” JSC ( – is the first and the only Russian plant manufacturing optical fiber. The plant is situated in Saransk, Mordovia Republic. It was officially opened on 25 September   2015. The shareholders of the company are RUSNANO, Gazprombank and the Government of Mordovia Republic.

Optical fiber is the main component of optic cables for signal transmission in modern communication networks. Fiber is also used as a sensor for monitoring deformation, temperature, acoustics and other indicators.

"Optic fiber Systems" JSC produces telecommunication optical fibers of standards G652 and G 657 A1 including those with reduced diameter of 200 microns; provides services on optical fiber coloring and the application of ring marks "ringmarking". Optical fibers of new types such as G651 and G655 are being prepared for release. Products are certified in Russia and the quality is confirmed by "Rostelecom" PJSC, Russia's leading cable companies and foreign consumers.

According to the results of certification, optical fiber was approved for use on the networks of the largest Russian Telecom operators Rostelecom, MTS, MegaFon and others.

Manufacturing capacity of the plant is 4 mln kilometers of optical fiber per year.
